01 — Discover the opportunity

You don't need to work for someone else forever.

A pool route is a list of pools you take care of every week. You drive to them. The customers pay you for the visit. That list is the business.

The work

What the week actually is

  1. 01

    You leave with a list

Not a store, and not a territory somebody sold you. A list of pools, the day you service each one, and the note from last time.

  2. 02

    You drive a loop

The same streets, in an order that doesn't cross town twice. The drive is part of the job. A sloppy loop eats the day.

  3. 03

    You do one visit

Skim, brush, baskets, the pad, the water, a note. Same order at the first house and the last. The order is what makes a route teachable.

  4. 04

You get paid for the visit

The customer is paying for you to show up and do that work. The invoice follows the visit. There is no separate 'business' hiding behind it.

  5. 05

    The list is the company

When the stops are steady and the visit is the same, someone else can run the day the way you would. That is the moment it is a business, and not only a job you gave yourself.

A Tuesday

The day is already decided

A starting route is a short loop, not a fifty-stop epic. Here is the shape of the day once the list exists.

  1. 6:40

You leave with the list, the chemicals, and the notes. The first decision of the day was made last week, when you set the order of the stops.

  2. 7:10

First gate. You read the note before you open it. Dog. Code. Filter was weak. Then the visit, in the order, not in the order you feel like.

  3. Through the morning

House, truck, house. You are not hunting for work. The work is already on the page. Your job is to do the visit and write what changed.

  4. After the last stop

The notes are the business leaving the truck. What you tested, what you added, what the office — even if the office is you at the kitchen table — needs to know.

Before you quit

Keep the paycheck while you build the list

The first quiet weeks are the risk. You can have the skill and still have an empty Tuesday. Get a reliable way to reach the pools, the basic tools, and insurance before you depend on the route to pay rent.

Keep enough saved to cover those quiet weeks. No one on this page can tell you the number. You know your rent. The route does not.

If you work for a company now, learn the visit there. Leave clean when you go. The customers on their list are theirs.
